I love the beauty and personality of staircases, particularly grand staircases and vintage ones. The staircase is a major architectural feature of the house. Who can forget the supporting role that staircases played in “Gone with the Wind,” “Cinderella,” “Titanic,” “Home Alone,” “Ghostbusters,” “Risky Business,” and other classic movies?
While most of the attention focuses on the railing and balusters, the sides of the stairs are usually plain and unadorned. By adding decorative stair brackets
(tread brackets), a plain, boring stringer can be transformed into an eye-catching accent.
Stair brackets are installed on the outside edge of each stair, and are a simple and inexpensive way to add an elegant design to a staircase. It is no wonder stair brackets are often referred to as the finishing touch to the stair system.
Just as staircases come in every architectural style from rustic to contemporary, stair brackets also come in many styles, shapes, and sizes to suit any style staircase.
These decorative brackets are made of wood, plaster, or high-density, furniture-grade polyurethane.
e has become a popular choice in recent years. It has the same type of density and detail as traditional wood or plaster stair bracket products and offers a number of advantages. It will not crack or split like wood or plaster and is lighter and stronger. Because they are made from factory molds, they are consistent in design and quality. They are also less costly than wood or plaster brackets.
Polyurethane stair brackets
are installed like appliques using standard finishing nails and/or polyurethane construction adhesive and is a simple DIY project that can be easily completed in a day.
Steps for Installing Polyurethane Stair Brackets
1 – Measure from the front to back of each stair and cut the end of the stair bracket to fit.
2 – Clean the surface where the bracket will be applied.
3 – Apply the caulk adhesive to the back of the bracket.
4 – Secure the bracket on the stairs. Finishing nails may be used to hold he bracket in place.
5 – You can paint either before or after installing the bracket.
